It’s that time of year again when young adults groups and youth groups everywhere are starting to do series on all things relationships. My church does one called “Love Games” each year and personally, I love it! I’ve always loved digging into this topic. One of my favorite classes as a Communication Studies major back in college was a Christian Relationships class where various aspects of relationships—friendship, singleness, dating, marriage, family, etc.—were addressed from three perspectives: psychology, theology, and communication theory.
I think one of the reasons I find this topic so interesting is because we were created by a relational God who created us for connection, and relationships are so incredibly vital to each of our lives in one way or another. When they’re going well, they add richness to our lives. When they’re not, they can be the source of a lot of grief. This makes me want to continually grow in learning how to do them well.
In particular, dating and romantic relationships are something I love learning about. One, because that’s the season of life I’m navigating. Two, because while we know from the Bible how sacred marriage is to God, it doesn’t explicitly talk about dating and as far as I can tell, we’re all just doing our best to figure it out. It’s helpful to bring it into a bigger conversation and learn from people who know more than me because they’ve gone ahead of me!
In honor of it being February, I figured I’d round up some of my favorite sermon series and podcasts on Christian dating and relationships that I’ve listened to and learned from over the years—in hopes they can be a helpful resource to you too. Each of the ones I’ve listed below cover several aspects of relationships, because each include several sermons or episodes. That being said, rather than trying to give a comprehensive synopsis, I’ll just include the description or mission statement of each (where there is one), as well as something I personally took away from the series.
In the beginning God created man and woman, and ever since we have been asking questions about love, marriage, sex, and romance. Loveology is an exploration of what the Bible has to say about the never ending story of male and female.
My favorite thing about this series, along with the book it’s based off of, is how it addresses all the stages of dating that lead up to marriage in a way that is so rooted in biblical wisdom.
Listen to Loveology Series by Bridgetown Church
One of my favorite parts of this podcast is when Mike Erre unpacks a passage in Song of Solomon to give us a guideline of three things to look for in a spouse. I found it to be very validating as to what’s important and to this day, it’s shaped my mindset of what it is I’m looking for.
Listen to EvFree Fullerton Sex, Love and God Podcast
In this series, Pastor Michael Todd shows us how to make healthy relationship goals.
This sermon series was filled with so many nuggets of wisdom, but one that stood out to me the most was an analogy given on the powerful role God designed sex to have within marriage. I feel like I’ve heard a lot of these types of analogies within Christian culture, but this one takes the cake!
Listen to #RelationshipGoals by Transformation Church
It’s a podcast—a voice for Christian, metropolitan dating. On the show, we collect honest stories to find liberating wisdom for discovery and companionship.
For this one, it’s less of one specific thing I’ve taken from it and more so that I’ve just overall really enjoyed listening to the podcast because it feels like a refreshing conversation with friends who just get it—because they too have had experience navigating dating and can help to normalize some of its nuances.
I loved how this series places a strong emphasis on asking yourself whether you are “becoming the person that the person you’re looking for is looking for.” It’s easy to have a standard of what we want in a partner, but perhaps an even more consequential pursuit to make sure we ourselves are also growing into people with the same type of character we are looking for in others.
